INTRODUCTION

When many people think of eastern China they imagine big cities and a high population density. Yet nature is thriving in many areas and there are excellent opportunities to view wildlife including some rare species.

In Yancheng wetlands, you can find Père David's deer, Chinese water deer, red-crowned cranes and Reed parrotbills.

Qinliangfeng in Hangzhou is home to the adorable and newly described Eastern Forest Hedgehog, as well as Hog Badgers, Chinese Hare and some interesting small mammals among many other species.

In Nanjing, Yangtze finless porpoises play in the river. Raccoon dogs, Asian badgers and Oriental storks can also be seen here.

DETAILS ITINERARY

Day 1

[Evening]: Stay overnight in Shanghai upon arrival.

Accommodation : Rezen Murray Hotel (Shanghai Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street) (or similar)

Meal : Breakfast; Supper (Feature Lunch)


Day 2

[Moring]:Take a private bus from Shanghai to Yancheng (approx. 3.5 hrs).

[Afternoon]:After lunch in Yancheng, drive to the Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve (approx. 1.5 hrs) for world's only wild Pere David's Deer.

[Evening]:Guided night safari to spot nocturnal mammals such as Tolai Hare and Amur Hedgehog, as well as night-roosting birds.

Day 3

[Moring]:Visit to the China Milu Park, the breeding centre for Pere David's Deer to observe the species up close and learn about its conservation and reintroduction history. At the same time, we continued to look for the Chinese water deer and will see many birds too.

[Afternoon]:Take the private bus to Nanjing and rest after checking into the hotel (approx. 3.5 hrs).

[Evening]:After dinner, ascend Purple Mountain in Nanjing for an evening wildlife search.

[Moring]:Yangtze River cruise to observe the critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoise and explore the Yangtze wetland ecosystem. [Afternoon]:After lunch, continue to search for finless porpoises depending on our luck in the morning.Join an interactive conservation experience for porpoise protection. Overnight in Nanjing.

Day 5

[Moring]:Take a morning high-speed train from Nanjing to Hangzhou (approx. 2.5 hrs). [Afternoon]:After lunch in Hangzhou, drive to Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve (approx. 2 hrs). [Evening]:After dinner, join a night drive in the forest to search for nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at a local guesthouse near Qingliangfeng.

Day 7

[Moring]:Take a private bus from Qingliangfeng to Hangzhou(approx. 2 hrs) Participate in cave exploration in Hangzhou to observe bats and other cave-dwelling species. [Afternoon]:Take the high-speed train from Hangzhou back to Shanghai (approx. 1 hrs) and end the trip.

Target Mammals: Japanese Pipistrelle, Rickett's Big-footed Myotis

Transport : high-speed train (0.5 hour), 5-seater sedan (2-2.5 hours)

Accommodation : Own arrangement

Meal : Breakfast; Lunch (Feature Lunch)

We can customize and organize time of tour according to your needs. But the best months are April to October. Some species, such as the Asian Badger, are difficult to observe between November and March.The Yangtze finless porpoise can be seen all year round, and in relatively cooler months, it is more active.

Given the unique nature of outdoor itineraries, our definition of "hotel/accommodation" may include:


1. Standard hotels (with private bathrooms);

2. Serviced apartments (we book entire apartments, with shared bathrooms among our group

members, e.g., a four-bedroom, two-living-room, two-bathroom unit);

3. Mountain huts (dormitory-style rooms, generally with shared bathrooms);

4. Specialty camps: 2-4 person rooms, usually with shared bathrooms, though some may have

private facilities.


Unless otherwise specified, all our accommodations are either standard hotels or serviced apartments (double or twin beds require advance reservation; twin beds are the default option).
